China presents Qatar Dubai Panda on the occasion of the 2022 World Cup |
China announced that it would grant two giant panda bears to Qatar in celebration of the Arab State's World Cup between 20 November and 18 December.
China's Ambassador to Doha, Zhou Jian, said that Suhail and Thuraya would arrive in Qatar next October, ahead of the 32-member tournament.
China, the world's most populous country, did not qualify for the Ball Cup, but Chinese companies were involved in building large projects associated with the sporting event.
During a reception in Doha, the ambassador added:
"This is a gift of 1.4 billion Chinese to the Qatar World Cup, and it will certainly become a new symbol of friendship between China and Qatar."
The bears were named "Sohail", after one of the most glossy visible stars in the Gulf region, and "Thuraya", the Arabic name of one of the most famous and glossy star clusters.
