Why are Google phones less popular than Apple and Samsung?

Google controls the world of Internet search engines, but this is not the case in the world of smartphones, where it lags far behind Apple and Samsung, which hold the lion's share.

According to CNET, which specializes in the review of mobile phones and electronic devices, Google has made its best phone ever. Google has launched two new phones in which its previous phones are outpaced by Google Pixel 7 and Google Pixel 7 Pro.

The new phones have better advantages, such as cameras that allow blind or visually impaired people a means of facilitating selfies.

Not only that, there is a feature that eliminates obscurity from old images.

But the event seemed to go unnoticed, with not as much interest and controversy as the iPhone 14 series revealed by Apple last September.

The technical website states that Apple and Samsung virtually dominate the world of smartphones, in Google does not appear to be a competitor.

Since the launch of its first phone in 2016, Google has sold 27.6 million copies to date.

In contrast, Samsung shipped about 272 million phones in 2021 only, which means that Google's 5-year turnover was about a tenth of Samsung's in a year.

According to IDC analysis, only Apple 2021 has sold more than 230 million phones and you can compare that number to Google.

This means that Google received a little share of the smartphone market.

Puzzlingly, Google phone sales are poor even though they are of high quality and loved by users who have acquired them.

The site states that there are 3 reasons why Google failed in the field of smartphone sales:

  • Monopolies

Google signed an exclusive partnership with Verizon, which provides network service to mobile users in the United States, at the launch of its phone, and this was a strategic mistake with significant repercussions.

These exclusive contracts meant that fewer consumers would buy Google phones, only because they were involved in companies other than Verizon, while subscribers to other companies could buy what they wanted from smartphones.

This limited spread of these phones has kept consumers out of their minds.

  • Late Tools

Apple and Samsung have established themselves in the public consciousness, as devices that go beyond all limits on the physical device and software in it, such as the presence of many sensors in the camera, while Google has kept the same camera sensor from Pixel 2 to Pixel 5.

This made Google have a reputation that is not as good, the device's physical capabilities as the camera still lag behind those of competitors' phone cameras.

  • Identity Crisis

So far, Google does not have a strong identity for its phones, making them distinct from iPhone and Samsung.

In the definition of "pixel", the company states that it is "the right phone for you", noting the ability to control advantages to serve everyone's needs, but that was not enough.

Experts say Pixel has not yet become a home brand, as with Samsung.

The problem with Google appears to be that the smartphone market is mature with the products of large competitors and consumers happy with it, and this poses a challenge for a new and attractive identity industry.
