Tom Hanks adds a new autobiography job and sparks controversy over his best films
After 5 years of success with the best-selling collection of stories (uncommon type) for 2017 (selling 234 thousand copies in the United Kingdom alone) and in his second "invasion" of the world of literary fiction, American actor Tom Hanks surprised the audience by confirming the addition of a "writer of fiction" for his autobiography, in an interview with People to promote his novel due to be published on 9 May 2023.
The novel is titled The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece and tells the story of a child whose uncle is influenced by a soldier returning from the World War.
Sara Shafi, in the British newspaper The Guardian, described it as a "very ambitious story" and publishing director Aila Ahmed said, "it's an epic about ordinary people, in an extraordinary world."
Hanks, 66y, was inspired by "important lessons" from his personal experiences during his Hollywood career, and told People that "every character in the novel plays a role in one of my films, discovers a philosophy or learns a lesson from what I've learned, but also repeats my idiots, whether it's a stunt I've done or a mistake I've survived."
Only 4 films Hanks considers good.
His conviction that "human passion is unaffected by the passage of time" extends to almost 80 years in the context of "thoughtful, influential and very enjoyable", says Shafi, during which the changes in American culture since the Second World War are highlighted.
Part of it, in 1947, revolved around a troubled soldier returning from war, who made poignant impressions on his 5-year-old nephew, who caused his talent to be blown up, and he wrote a picture story. (comic) About his uncle in 1970, to come one of the directors decides to turn the story into a big-budget blockbuster, featuring an up-and-coming film star, "Very Difficult", a "Wonderful" leading actress, as well as an inspiring director, "Eccentric", and more unusual crew members.
The novel is also interspersed with Hanks' satirical writing painted by the famous cartoonist and comics Robert Securac. Hanks says, "I'm still surprised at how most movies get together in this work, from just flashing an idea, the whole experience is a miracle."
Although those who believe that "filmmaking is a very hard job, the greatest job in the world, the most confusing work", the star - the best actor Oscar winner for his roles in my film: Philadelphia 1993 and Forrest Gump 1994 who starred in Elvis last June - concedes sarcastically and says, "
Frank, bold and shocking opinions
Critic Stuart Heritage is surprised by Hanks' saying, "The great actor who made so many good films, and has had successes over decades, makes any other actor on earth jealous of him." He sees only 4 of his films as the best of the rest, considering that this pushes him to dive deep "Trying to get to that favorite group that Hanks is talking about."
He adds that Hanks told the Guardian that the 1998 film "Saving Private Ryan" won 5 Oscars, plus 79 wins and 75 other nominations. His ranking of 24 was among the top 250 films on IMDb, "For Hanks, it was terrible, terrible, and he wished he was doing something else."
Hanks also stunned everyone - in an interview with last year's Bill Simmons Podcast - when asked to classify his favorite films, he dismissed the Oscar-gifted film Forest Gump as "ineligible."
Also, he had already declared his displeasure with other acts, such as The Man with One Red Shoe 1985, a film that Hanks did not hide his disdain for in his statement to the press, where he said "it is not a good film, no revenue has ever been generated (he made less than $9 million against a budget of 16 million)."
The Bonfire of the Vanities 1990, which failed so badly, and two decades after its release, Hanks said about it, "Everybody was wrong, me in particular" (earned less than $16 million for a budget of 47 million).
Four favorite movies.
Good films intended by Hanks may surprise you, who says his ratings are based on personal experience, and the lessons he learned during her filming that are unforgettable.
In his meeting with Bill Simmons, he chose a list including 1992's A League of Their Own, saying "because all I've done all summer is play baseball." Cast Away 2000, saying "Because we had bold adventures when we were making this film" and Cloud Atlas 2012, saying "Because it gave us hope and a dream, nothing but a circle of love" and saying about it in an interview with "Guardian" in 2017, Cloud Atlas changed my whole consciousness, the only film I've ever been in and seen more than twice.
To keep only one film mysterious, Hanks ranks it above all others "is a film he has not only written and directed, but also acted in, and has become one of the films he regularly attends" according to Heritage, it's a film! (That Thing You Do) 1996, about which he discussed extensively during an appearance on a podcast last year and described as "the greatest work experience of his life."
