Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo wanted Manchester United to leave Old Trafford during the summer transfer window but failed to exit despite the relentless efforts of his agent Jorge Mendes.

Ronaldo is no longer a major pillar of the Red Devils, with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag in just two of 7 Premier League games this season.

Since then, the Dutch coach has been keen to retain the 5-time winner of the Ballon d'Or, but - apparently - Erik ten Hag is ready to agree to his departure, as Ronaldo looks forward to his departure next January, according to the British Telegraph.

The Portuguese captain, who is said to have maintained his professionalism during his ordeal, hopes that his strong projected performance at the Qatar World Cup this winter will tempt Champions League teams to sign him at the Winter Mercato shortly after the conclusion of the World Cup.

If an appropriate offer comes to Ronaldo, it is believed that the fans of Old Trafford will deposit their legendary number "7" after less than 18 months in Manchester.

Ronaldo appeared frustrated as he sat on the bench during the Red Devils' 6-3 defeat to arch-rivals Manchester City in the Manchester derby last Sunday, despite making all five substitutions available to him, and Erik ten Hag opted against Ronaldo "out of respect for his big career."

The catastrophic defeat led to calls from former United stars Roy Keane and Rio Ferdinand for coach Erik ten Hag to involve Ronaldo, their former team-mate, who scored his only goal of the season from the penalty spot against Moldovan side Sherif in the Europa League.

Kane claims that Erik ten Hag showed "disrespect" for Ronaldo, warning that the situation would soon turn "worse."

Kane added: Why the coach refused to move Ronaldo in the transfer window and stuck to him should have allowed him to leave the team I think you stuck to him and kept him in it.
Holland coach Erik ten Hag had involved France's Martial, who scored twice for the team, but why Ronaldo wasn't involved I think things will be difficult in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Ferdinand agreed with Kane and criticized Erik ten Hag's decision to keep Ronaldo on the bench against Man City.

If you have the best goalscorer in the world, who scored 24 goals last season and sits on the substitute's doorstep, why?

"The hardest thing in football is scoring goals, and this guy does it well, if not better than any other player," he concluded.
