Shocking statistics... One-third of the world's population is offline!

A third of the world's population remains offline in 2022, amid a slowdown in the pace of new communications, according to the latest statistics published by the United Nations on Friday.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) said in a statement that Internet users amounted to 5.3 billion worldwide, but with no new investment in infrastructure and new digital skills, it became difficult to connect all the world's population in 2030.

This comes as 2,7 billion people are still unable to access the Internet this year. They numbered 3 billion in 2021 and 3.6 billion in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Holin Zhao, also stressed that this "gave us a good liaison boost, but we must maintain the same pace to ensure universal access" to digital services .

We need to invest in digital networks and technologies to achieve this.

He added that "we need to invest in digital networks and technologies so that we can achieve it as quickly as possible."

Furthermore, the International Telecommunication Union has identified two major obstacles to its goal of making the world's population fully connected: still-offline populations are also the most inaccessible, as well as difficulties in moving from simple network access to regular and easy access.

The Federation considers that obstacles are often minimized, such as very slow communication speeds, very high prices for equipment and subscriptions, lack of digital culture or even cultural and linguistic barriers, but also gender differentiation is male, female and sometimes problems of electricity shortages and interruption or lack thereof in some countries.

There are also strong differences between regions. Africa remains the least connected of the six regions of the Union, with 40% of the population enjoying Internet access, and 70% in Arab countries .

In the Asia-Pacific region, Internet penetration increased from 61% in 2021 to 64% this year. The North and South American continents, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and Europe have rates above 80%.

The European continent is ranked first with 89% of its population connected to the Internet.
